Applicability
All participants to the hackathon must comply with the present Code of Conduct. It applies to everyone including organisers, partners, mentors and volunteers, in the entire digital realm of the hackathon — meaning not only on the digital platforms provided by the organisers but also on any platform a team choses to use to communicate and collaborate together.
Principles
The hackathon aims to provide a safe and welcoming space for every participant. We therefore expect everyone to respect the following principles:
Do not harass
Harassment is any unwelcome or hostile behaviour towards another person for any reason.
Harassment includes, but is not limited to: offensive verbal comments related to personal characteristics or choices, sexual images or comments, deliberate intimidation, bullying, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of discussion or events, nonconsensual publication of private comments, or unwelcome sexual attention.
A conduct does not have to be intentional to be harassment.
We will not tolerate any form of harassment based on age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, physical appearance, body size, mental or physical disability, neuro(a)typicality, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, political views, socioeconomic status or background, level of knowledge, level of experience, technical experience or lack of, previous hackathon attendance or lack of, or any other attribute.
Respect everyone
We have designed the hackathon to provide a space for people from different backgrounds and skill levels to join and work together on the common goal to build a more sustainable and inclusive society.
It is to be expected that not everybody will share the same opinions. But we expect that disagreement is done respectfully, and that participants also educate each other respectfully.
Do not assume anybody else’s level of expertise or knowledge, and do not belittle a lack of information. We are all learning, so afford others - as well as yourself - room to learn and grow.
Be professional and appropriate
Additionally, participants are not allowed to utilize sexually suggestive content, images, activities, or material in their projects.
Aspirations
While this Code of Conduct exists primarily to prevent certain bad behaviour, we also believe that participants should work towards a higher standard. To that end, we strongly encourage the following conduct, though they are considered aspirational rather than necessary.
Build With, Not For
Work to ensure that the community is well-represented in all stages of development. Seek out those who are under-represented, and remove barriers to access. Listen as much - or more - than you speak, and give full consideration to all ideas, even if they seem improbable at first.
Empower, Experiment, and Find a Way for Everybody to Contribute
When more people share their knowledge and skills, they give a project a greater chance to succeed. When somebody shows up with an unusual skill, look for ways to fit them into the team rather than reasons why it wouldn’t work. Experiment with new approaches, and don’t be afraid to try something that might not work.
ProceduresÂ
Reporting a violation
If you believe that there is a violation of the Code of Conduct occurring during the event, please contact us immediately at ryena_84@um.edu.my.
If you would like a faster response, please contact any organisers who are online on the official Telegram group. If your harasser is an organiser, please contact another organiser as soon as possible.
Outcomes
All reporters will remain anonymous and we will implement the strictest measures to ensure that all attendees are receiving a safe experience. Any person in violation of the Code of Conduct may be sanctioned or expelled from the hackathon at the discretion of the organisers.
